How Porgs Conquered the Galaxy

The Puffin/Porg Connection

One of the most vivid memories from my trip to Skellig Micheal last summer was getting up close and personal with some of the most adorable creatures on the planet – puffins. As I climbed up and down the iconic Jedi Steps the puffins peppered the scenery and seemed to not only enjoy their human visitors, but actually smile and pose for photos!
Puffins have an interesting connection with Star Wars. In the early stages of production for Episode 7, the cover for scouting Skellig Micheal was a “Puffin Documentary”. I remember thinking it would be cool if some puffins were in the background during The Last Jedi. So I got really excited when posted a rumor about puffin type creatures back in December of 2016. (FYI possible other spoilers in that article!)

The Porg rumor was confirmed in July when we saw our first official glimpse in the behind the scenes sizzle reel at comicon and a article was posted. The cute, pudgy space puffins are an homage to the native Puffins and were the brain child of none other than The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson. I like to describe them as a cross between a puffin, a platypus and maybe a guinea pig? They are native to the Island of Ahch-To and are apparently inquisitive and force sensitive which will no doubt be entertaining.

 Porgs, Porgs Everywhere

Since their debut, Porgs have skyrocketed in popularity. From a marketing standpoint, Porgs are absolutely genius! Cute is always a safe bet and we can see from the flood of Porg merchandise that is certainly the case. Books, toys, blankets, pajamas, mugs, cuff link, pins and even a postage stamp are just a few of the Porg merch products I’ve seen so far, and I’m sure as time goes on that list will just grow. And in addition to all the merchandise, this new darling to the Star Wars universe has charmed it’s way into many a fan’s heart via things like fan art and memes.

Porg Backlash?

Although wildly popular, not every fan is excited about Porgs. Some people are not fans of ‘cute’ and see the Porgs merely as a marketing ploy. Others are already exhausted at the over saturation of the Porgs. Some are more excited about what a Porg would taste like and have even surmised that Chewbacca might feast on a Porg or two while he waits on Ahch-to. It will be interesting to see how Porg-mania plays out in the months leading up to the release of The Last Jedi, as well as post TLJ when we’ll see if they live up to our expectations. Will they end up being the next Ewok, Gungan…or something else? All we can say is if you’re planning on a tattoo or other costly investment featuring a Porg you may want to wait until December to go through with it.

It’s a Porg Life For Me!

I, for one, am thriled with our new addition to the Galaxy Far, Far Away. They are of course adorable, but also a lovely reminder of my time in Ireland. I plan to do an article about my Porg acquisitions soon, so stay tuned for that!

  • Love them! just hoping they don’t look too “engineered” in future years – if they follow the more authentic look of the ewoks (which seems to be the case) then they should be a hit. CGI just dates so badly (as shown with Jar jar and the additions to the original movies)!
