The acquisition of Lucas Film and all its Star Wars goodness by the Walt Disney Company brought with it numerous possibilities including the hope of a theme park or new attractions. Well on August 5th 2015 we got our wish as Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Star Wars land was in development and would encompass 14 acres which translates to 609840 square feet, in other words ITS HUGE!
On March 3rd it was announced that construction would begin in April 2016 at both Disney Land California and Walt Disney World Florida, the latter being located in Hollywood Studios along with the new Toy Story Land.
So what do we know?
President of Parks and Resorts Bob Chapek painted this picture of Star Wars Land: “will introduce you to a Star Wars planet you’ve never seen before — a gateway planet located on the outer rim, full of places and characters familiar and not so familiar.”
According to Iger: It will be “occupied by many inhabitants; humanoids, aliens and droids … the attractions, the entertainment, everything we create will be part of our storytelling. Nothing will be out of character or stray from the mythology. ”
The intent of the project is to make us feel like we have just walked into one of the movies and that the opportunity to bring Star Wars into the physical world will give Disney Imagineers the chance to do things they had never done before. The hope is that our senses will be engaged like never before. Questions will be answered: What does that street feel like? What does that animal smell like? What does blue milk taste like?
Star Wars Land will have two main attractions, the first of which will allow riders to control the Millennium Falcon (Punch It Chewie!), and another that will put us in the middle of a battle between the first order and the resistance.
